Raúl Barrera – Lead Engineer

Raul is a degree qualified mechanical and electrical engineer, with a career spanning over 20 years. With national competencies as a Statutory Surface Coal Electrical Engineering Manager, and hazardous area classification and design, he is also an accredited auditor for HV and Hazardous Area electrical installations.

Beginning his engineering career in construction projects such as Pepsi Company bottling plants and with Liebert Corporation on large scale UPS and power protection infrastructure, Raul continued as project engineer for Pemex refineries in Mexico. Here he worked with 138 kV OHL supply, on a gas processing plant and Merox Treaters upgrade, and a sour gas plant (amine gas treatment process). In 2000 Raul conducted research for the Queensland Manufacturing Institute for their High Velocity Oxy-Fuel program. In 2002 for Peabody Underground, he managed electrical design and installation up to 66 kV for fuelling systems, re-agents (Hazardous areas) for gold and copper mines at Cannington in Qld, Ridgeway in NSW, and Telfer and Perseverance in WA. In 2004, he worked on the 330kV Snowy Hydro Tumut 1 UG feeders to Dederang substation (Vic) including testing of the connection arrangement on the 1950’s oil-filled cables still in service.

Raul’s Mining experience includes Lead Electrical Engineer for Anglo Coal – Thiess-Sedgman Dawson Alliance’s coal handling and processing plant and overland conveyors at Moura Queensland, a position as Electrical Design Manager for Lake Vermont Resources – Thiess Coal Project at Dysart Queensland (up to 66 kV), and as the Electrical Engineering Superintendent for Xstrata Mt Isa zinc and lead mill and concentrator upgrade, including 132kV Xstrata Mica Creek Supply to Mt Isa Mines.

Benchmark projects in Raul’s resume include Airport Link, the Victorian Desalination Plant, and HV Auditing for Newcrest Mining’s MOPU Project on Lihir Island, PNG, BMA’s Goonyella Riverside 132/66kV Substation, and Hazardous Area Auditing for the APLNG and QCLNG Projects.
