Raúl Barrera - Lead Engineer

Raúl, performing the role of Lead Engineer and Auditor for the Voltex Group, is a degree qualified mechanical and electrical professional engineer; and holds a Master of Engineering Practice specialising in Power Systems Engineering.

His career spans more than 27 years in engineering practice and 10 years as an accredited Hazardous Area, High Voltage and Safety Management Systems Auditor.

As an Engineer, from the early days of his career in oil refineries and sugar mills in his native Mexico, to underground metalliferous mining at Telfer in WA and Cannington in Qld, coal mines in the Bowen Basin and Cadia in NSW, as well as the landmark projects of Brisbane Airport Link, the Victorian Desalination Plant and APLNG Curtis Island, Raúl continues to lead a team of power engineers driven by the desire to provide engineering excellence on time and on budget. Projects brought to fruition by Raúl and his Voltex team include power system design and commissioning of T-Park Power Station, Hong Kong; power distribution network design and commissioning for a green field copper mine for First Quantum Minerals in Panama and power studies for BHP Billiton, Olympic Dam Mine in South Australia.

As an Auditor, Raúl has performed numerous statutory High Voltage and Hazardous Area audits across several industries over the last 10 years and is a member of the Voltex team accredited by the Queensland Government, Electrical Safety Office to provide Prescribed Electricity Entities with Statutory Safety Management Systems audits.

Raúl is also a qualified and accomplished trainer, holding a Vocational Diploma of Management and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and delivers nationally recognised electrical training to personnel in Australian entities such as Mount Isa  Mines, Queensland; Bell Bay Aluminium Smelter, Tasmania; Queensland Rail and Sydney Trains as well  as delivering training to overseas operations, for example Newcrest Lihir Gold Mine; Harmony Gold, Hidden Valley Mine; both in Papua New Guinea and Oceana Gold’s, Didipio Mine in the Philippines.
